This directory contains 26 Mars Global Surveyor Orbiter Camera (MOC) images in Planetary Data System (PDS) compressed image (IMQ) format. To create PDS uncompressed image (IMG) format, use the program 'readmoc' which is provided on the PDS archive CD-ROMs in the software directory. That directory includes both a SunOS (and Solaris) and Windows98 (DOS) version of the decompression program. This directory also includes a text file, 'ancillary.tab' that provides ancillary image information in PDS format, and a JPEG version of the maps provided by T. Parker showing the landing ellipses presently being targeted, with the approximate locations of the 13 NA and 13 WA context images included in this release marked in red and blue, respectively. NOTE_OCTOBER_2003: This note documents two items: (1) Gusev has been designated the landing site for MER-A (Spirit); no additional images of the Elysium Low-wind site will be taken. (2) A recent map provided by M. Golombek showing gores in the Meridiani site coverage shows an ellipse substantially south of previous maps used in targeting. Whether this is a change or we've been using the wrong ellipse is moot--all new images are targeted to the map provided in October. NOTE_JULY_2003: A revised Meridiani ellipse was received this month and was used in the this and all subsequent months' targeting. NOTE_JUNE_2003: Following the November 2002 delivery, additional images were acquired primarily to fill gaps in coverage, as these images could not be incorporated in the deliberations for landing site selection. Following the "final" landing site meetings, only one of the four sites (Isidis) was eliminated from further consideration. Site ellipses for Elysium and Gusev were moved slightly...most of the existing images covered these new ellipses. A revised Meridiani ellipse is pending. NOTE_SEPTEMBER_2002: Following the late August 2002 Landing Site Workshop, the western of the two Elysium ellipses was removed from further consideration. The remaining sites are Hematite, Isidis, Gusev, and Elysium Low-Wind East. NOTE_JULY_2002: Following the guidelines given me after the 3rd Landing Site Workshop and by M. Gollombek regarding low wind sites in Elysium and by John Grant regarding the removal of Athabasca from further consideration, the remaining sites are Hematite, Isidis, Gusev, and two Elysium locations. NOTE: These data have not been validated for delivery to the PDS. They are made available to the Mars Geoscience community and the Mars Exploration Program to support landing site selection and validation for the Mars Exploration Rover (MER) 2003 and later landing missions.
